SHAFT SINKING: Redpath wins contract for Lalor ventilation shaft

MANITOBA - The Redpath Group of North Bay, ON, has been awarded the sinking contract for the ventilation shaft at HudBay's Lalor gold-zinc mine near Snow Lake. Completion is expected by April 2012.

The shaft will be 857 metres long and 6.2 metres in diameter, excavated by the full face blind sinking method using two one-boom jumbos. The walls will be lined with rebar and screening, and about 30% of the walls will be shotcreted. The ventilation shaft will be used temporarily for hoisting ore at a rate of 1,500 t/d.

Redpath is also advancing the access ramp at the nearby Chisel North mine and the Lalor production ramp. Ore production from the Lalor mine is to begin in Q2 2012.
