OTTAWA, Ontario The MINING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (MAC) has unveiled its Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) Manual for Tailings and Water Management Facilities. The aim is to ensure the safety and integrity of tailings and related facilities around the globe. The new guide complements MAC's guide to the Management of Tailings Facilities, published in 1998.

The guide covers a range of issues, beginning with how to prepare an OMS manual for a site. It explains how to write a description of an operation. There are separate sections on operation, maintenance, surveillance, and emergency planning and response. This is a practical and thorough guide to the OMS process.

The guide is posted in .pdf format on the MAC web site, www.mining.ca. It is available in English, French or Spanish.
