LONDON, UK – The Mining Journal has named the 20 most influential people in the mining industry, a task that is never easy. Evidently there was considerable disagreement among the staffers in the office. Topping the list is Xi Jinping, president of the People’s Republic of China. He was chosen as a proxy for his country’s economic policy in general. Donald Trump made the list at No.6, but Barack Obama was dropped. There were several names on the list that have a Canadian connection. Rick Rule of Sprott US was No.3. Robert Friedland of Ivanhoe Mines and beneficiary of the sale of Voisey’s Bay to Inco was No.4. Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani (at one time Inco’s chief executive) was No. 5. Ross Beatty, founder and chairman of Vancouver’s Pan American Silver, is No. 15. Barrick Gold chairman John Thornton is No.16. Notable Canadians that were off the list this time around included Randy Smallwood of Silver Wheaton and Kevin Dukshinsky, president of Barrick Gold.
