SASKATCHEWAN – Cameco Corp. has begun milling high grade ore from Cigar Lake at the nearby McClean Lake mill operated by Areva Resources Canada. Cameco said that in 2014 the new mine provided ore that was milled to produce 340,000 lb of uranium concentrate.

As Cigar Lake production ramps up, Cameco expects production this year to be 6 million to 8 million lb U3O8 in concentrate. The mine will reach full production of 18 million lb per year in 2018. As 50% owner, Cameco's share will be 9 million lb. The balance of the output will be distributed proportionally by partners Areva (37.1%), Idemitsu (7.875%) and Tepco (5%).

Production at Cigar Lake began in March 2014. Because the deposit has an average grade of 15.8% U3O8, jet boring was chosen as a mining method to reduce workers' exposure to radiation.
