NORTHWEST TERRITORIES – Vancouver-based Canadian Zinc Corp. has initiated underground mine rehabilitation at its Prairie Creek zinc-lead-silver mine 200 km west of Fort Simpson. Procon Mining and Tunneling will undertake rehabilitation, exploration, development and initial production mining.
In May 2012, measured and indicated resources stood at 5.43 million tonnes at 10.8% Zn, 10.2% Pb and 160 g/t Ag. The inferred portion was 6.24 million tonnes at 14.5% Zn, 11.5% Pb and 229 g/t Ag.
Most of the Prairie Creek development was completed in the early 1980s, but was abandoned when the price of silver collapsed. Canadian Zinc acquired its interest in the project 10 years later. To optimize and upgrade the project, the company is planning a more fuel efficient power plant, changes to the winter access road, and new accommodations. A paste backfill plant and dense media separation circuit are also on the horizon.
