SAN DIEGO, California - The U.S.-based NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL has given its prestigious Robert W. Campbell Award for excellence in environment, health and safety to ALCAN INC. of Montreal. The award recognizes the very best businesses worldwide that integrate environment, health and safety (EHS) management as a key business value and that demonstrate how EHS performance is linked to productivity and profitability.
Alcan launched its EHS First program in April 2003 to create a means to building EHS excellence at all of the company's operations. It integrated its own best practices and those from third parties, as well as ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 specifications, and spelled out the company's key EHS requirements, roles and responsibilities. Alcan says the EHS First system has delivered more than US$40 million in savings, as well as avoiding numerous injuries and incidents.
The National Safety Council's (www.NSC.org) award honours Robert W. Campbell, an attorney who practised in Chicago early in the 20th century. He pioneered the U.S. occupational safety movement and served as the first president of the NSC from 1913 to 1917.
In a separate undertaking, ALCAN INC. and the UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA have teamed up to designate an Alcan Chair in Advanced Process Engineering at the west coast school. Alcan will contribute $250,000 over five years. The chair will support research activity in material process engineering, specializing in aluminum.
