BRITISH COLUMBIA - The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 has rejected a tentative labour agreement covering the Kemess gold mine 430 km northwest of Prince George. Owner NORTHGATE MINERALS of Vancouver ordered its operating subsidiary to begin an orderly shutdown of the operation on Feb. 22, 2005. Talks between representatives of both sides are continuing.

The Kemess mine produces approximately 300,000 oz of gold and 75 million lb of copper annually. The project is expanding to the Kemess North deposit 5 km north of the existing mine. Mining Kemess North, which has 4.1 million oz of gold in proven and probable reserves, will extend the life of the project to 2020. More information is available at www.NorthgateMinerals.com.
