ONTARIO - Australian company INTELLECTION has installed a second, new Qemscan 4300 at the FALCONBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE, near Sudbury, Ont. The first system was acquired in 1998.

The decision to acquire a second Qemscan (quantitative evaluation of materials using scanning electron microscopy) came about because of the increased demand for characterization of new mineral deposits that Falconbridge is interested in. In addition, a more detailed ore characterization treatment of material in existing mines gives the concentrator the opportunity to adjust the process for the ore. This acquisition is all part of a general expansion of process mineralogy support to Falconbridge and Noranda operations and exploration.

Qemscan provides the flexibility of an X-ray based automated mineral analysis system, which is crucial when dealing with both gangue and ore minerals simultaneously. The capability of mapping complex mineral textures that involve gangue minerals is another feature of the system.

Falconbridge's chief geoscientist, Dr. Peter J. Whittaker, can be contacted at 705-693-2761 ext 3412 or pwhittaker@sudbury.falconbridge.com. Or visit www.intellection.com.au.
