CMJ readers are an intelligent group. We are pleased to report that 61% of the respondents to last week's question (which country is the largest coal producer in the world?) knew that China (2.4 billion tonnes in 2006) is the leader. I'm reasonably sure our readers didn't look up the answer because 23% thought Australia was the largest, when in fact it ranks fourth (374 million tonnes). The United States (which is second with 1.05 billion tonnes) got the vote from 13% of our readers and Germany (197 million tonnes) garnered only 2% of the vote.
