QUEBEC — The latest Canadian miner to announced an extended summer shutdown is titanium producer QIT-Fer et Titane. All operations at the Tio open pit near Havre-St-Pierre and metallurgical complex at Sorel-Tracy will be temporarily suspended on July 12. The mine will reopen at the end of August, followed on Sept. 8 by the plant.

 

The shutdown will affect approximately 1,800 of QIT's 2,000 employees.

 

The end-of-2009 shutdown has been moved forward a week, and plans are for it to begin on Dec. 11.

 

QIT-Fer et Titane (www.QIT.com) is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto.
