We at CMJ are often asked the question, “Is anything like the Mining Sourcebook available for countries other than Canada?” To our knowledge, the short answer is still “no”, but there is a new volume that will interest many of our readers.

The Australian Gold Annual 1999/2000 contains information on all gold mines, projects and prospects in that country. It also includes a special section on where drilling, geomagnetics and geophysics are planned and where joint venture partners are being sought. Details on location, ownership, management, resources and reserves, production, cash costs, plant capacity and treatment methods plus geological descriptions are covered. An analysis of recent activity and planned work is also included. There is, unfortunately, no listing of equipment makes, sizes and models at the mines and mills.

At the front of this volume are industry overviews, a message from the Australian Gold Council, a production survey and views from various analysts. These are followed by sections on mines and on projects, each of which begins with an easy reference section. Next come the projects, prospects, proposed joint ventures and proposed work programs. These are followed by a list of companies and their interests, and finally by an alphabetical list of deposits with the page numbers on which they appear.

A.A. Balkema International has recently published Mining in the Arctic, the proceedings of the fifth international symposium, held in Yellowknife in June 1998. Topics include the Raglan, Ekati, Polaris and Brewery Creek mines and Diavik and Jericho diamond projects in Canada, the Red Dog mine in Alaska, and work in Russia and Norway.
