Diavik takes honours at mine rescue competition

In a competition hosted by the Workers’ Compensation Board of NWT and Nunavut, the mine rescue team of Diavik Diamond Mines Ltd. took home the Surface Mine rescue award. It was the first time the team, which includes captain Mark Wood, vice-captain Fred Steinwand, Tim Evans, Brad Rogers, Craig Plamondon, Jim Way, Brian Chaput and coach Tracey Zarn, competed in the event.

The competition included a written test and several events including fire fighting, a rope rescue task, a bench test, a surface obstacle, a smoke task and a first aid scenario with multiple casualties and hazards. The Diavik team is now eligible to compete in the western regional Mine Rescue Competition next month in Fernie, B.C.
