Ryan Trophies Winners

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | June 1, 2004 | 12:00 am

Three coal mines–Luscar Coal Ltd.’s Sheerness and Genesee open pit mines in Alberta and Hillsborough Resources Ltd.’s Quinsam underground mine in British Columbia–shared the John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy for the year 2003 coal mine competition, with identical reportable injury rates of 0.0, demonstrating the highest level of commitment to safe production.

In the metal mine category, Kinross Gold Corp.’s New Britannia mine in northern Manitoba won the trophy. This operation also won in the metal mine category in 1997 and received regional trophies in 1998 and 2002. In the select mine category, PCS Potash NB Division earned top honours. This New Brunswick mine is a frequent safety leader. It captured regional trophies in 1998, 1999 and 2002.

The trophies were presented in May at the 106th annual general meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, in Edmonton, Alta.

The Ryan Trophy Safety competition began in 1941 when the Mine Safety Appliances Company of Canada–now MSA Canada Inc.–donated a trophy to encourage safe production of minerals as part of Canada’s wartime effort. These much-treasured trophies are symbols of the premier safety competition in one of Canada’s safest heavy industries.
