Cat 657G comes as tractor or scraper

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | January 1, 2006 | 12:00 am

Caterpillar has introduced its new 657G tractor/scraper with ACERT technology, a new cooling system, enhanced cab and easy service features. It comes with either a 600/554-hp Cat C18 engine in the tractor or a 451/410-hp Cat C15 engine in the scraper.

ACERT engine technology offers reliable, responsive performance and reduced emissions. Both the C18 and C15 engines meet U.S. and European exhaust requirements. They have dual power capabilities, producing more power in higher gears for reduced cycle times. The engines have only two belts, both of which are tensioned automatically.

The 657G retains several familiar features from the small G-series models and adds some improvements. Bowl, apron and ejector functions are controlled from a single joystick. The joystick has a handle-hand rest to steady the operator’s arm. The electronic controller simplifies gear selection. The new operator’s seat offers four different swivel lock points to allow proper positioning with the joystick. Engine start-up and monitoring are done directly from the cab, which has a quad-gauge cluster for easy reading.

The next-generation modular radiator features fewer fins per inch, which reduces clogging in severe applications. For easy access to the radiator core, the grill of the vehicle is hinged and there are two side panels.

The 657G can be equipped with a standard bowl or an auger for improved self-loading. Heaped loading capacity is 33.6 m3, and a high-capacity bowl will be available in 2007. Contact your local Cat dealer or visit www.cat.com.
