Question…

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | January 1, 2009 | 12:00 am

A radioactive quiz? A nuclear generating station is rated to produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity. How much nuclear fuel does it consume in one year? Here are the guidelines.

Assume that the station works non-stop, around the clock, for an entire year, at the full rated power, with no downtime and no service time. Assume that a year has exactly 365 full days of exactly 24 hours each. Assume that the station itself does not consume any electricity. Finally, assume that 30% of the nuclear energy is converted to electricity.

Please calculate the answer in kilograms, rounded to the nearest kilogram, and send your answer to rnoble@canadianminingjournal.com

& ….. Answer

In our last regular issue, we asked: What would the Sudbury nickel be worth, based on nickel selling for US$14,000 per tonne? Congratulations to Waheed Ahmad from Sheridan Park, ON, and O. J. Muller, Calgary, for correctly answering $4, 866, 673. Each will receive a gas voucher from Petro-Canada.
