The opening of the Jericho diamond mine on Aug. 17, 2006, represented the birth of the diamond industry in Nunavut. The opening was attended by (left to right) James Eetoolook, Nunavut Tunngavik vice-president; Donald Havioyak, president, Kitikmeot Inuit Association; The Hon. Paul Okalik, Premier of Nunavut Territory; Peter Gillin, chairman and CEO of Tahera; The Right Hon. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada; and The Hon. James Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs & Northern Development.
