Mine Rehabilitation Symposium Attracts Delegates From Coast To Coast
More than 100 delegates from across Canada attended the second annual Ontario Mine Reclamation Symposium in Timmins earlier this month to hear papers given by over a dozen speakers from various mining, scientific and academic backgrounds.
From highly technical presentations entitled “Physico-chemical parameters controlling in-situ microbial sulfate reduction in mining environments” to the “Use of municipal biosolids in land reclamation in Ontario,” to case studies involving mine reclamation projects across Canada, there was something for everyone during the two-day event.
Capping off the gathering were a number of field trips to tailings sites in the Timmins area where delegates got a close-up look at rehabilitation work being done at places like the Pamour Open Pit shortly before in goes into temporary suspension; the Broulan-Reef Tailings where historically, neutral gold tailings were covered with a layer of acid-generating tailings; the McIntyre Tailings, which are being recovered for paste backfill; and the Hollinger Tailings Management Area (HTMA) where reclamation is just getting underway.
