Komatsu's Germany Mining Division has announced the global launch of the PC9000-12, the largest and most innovative hydraulic mining excavator in the company's portfolio. After proving successful in the Canadian market, the massive machine now becomes available worldwide through Komatsu's global dealer network.
The PC9000-12 represents the next evolution in Komatsu's surface mining lineup, engineered to help mining operations achieve higher productivity, improved efficiency and lower cost per ton while delivering the power, performance and reliability customers expect.
Flexible design meets tough mining conditions
Mining companies can configure the PC9000-12 with diesel Tier 4, diesel unregulated or electric drive options. This flexibility allows operations to align equipment selection with regulatory requirements and site-specific conditions across different regions. As the largest model in Komatsu's PC series, the excavator offers the highest bucket capacity, longest reach and strongest digging power in the lineup. These capabilities translate into optimized cycle times, increased output and reduced production costs for mining operations.
The PC9000-12 comes in both front shovel and backhoe configurations, equipped with either a 46 m³ front shovel or 49 m³ backhoe bucket. Engineers precisely optimized the machine to load Komatsu's largest mining trucks ranging from 240 to 400 short tons in three to five passes.
Impressive performance numbers
With a payload exceeding 80 tons per pass, the PC9000-12 can load a Komatsu 980E truck in just five passes within 150 seconds. Under optimal conditions, this performance translates into production rates around 8,000 tons per hour. The excavator handles efficient double-side loading and integrates with Komatsu's FrontRunner autonomous haulage system, positioning it for future-ready mine sites. Operators benefit from a spacious, ergonomically optimized cabin and advanced monitoring systems that reduce fatigue, improve visibility and enhance situational awareness throughout every shift.
Global launch follows Canadian success
"Representing the next evolution in our product lineup, the PC9000-12 sets a new benchmark for global surface mining operations," Peter Buhles, vice president of sales and services, said.
"With its versatile configurations – including face shovel and backhoe, as well as diesel and electric drive options – we can efficiently serve all major mining operations worldwide. The PC9000-12 delivers the power, performance and reliability our customers expect, while supporting higher productivity, lower emissions per ton and seamless integration with autonomous haulage systems."
Komatsu delivered the inaugural PC9000-12 in May 2025 to an oil sands operation in Canada. SMS Equipment served as launch partner for the Canadian market, supporting successful introduction and commissioning of the first machines in collaboration with Komatsu and the customer.
