BRAZIL — The Brazilian operation of leading global professional services consultancy, Coffey International, has entered into a preliminary strategic partnership with the U.K.’s Virtalis, one of the world’s leading virtual reality (VR) companies.

Virtalis showcased its GeoVisionary software, the 3-D landscape visualising software that it developed jointly with the British Geological Survey, at Coffey’s booth during EXPOSIBRAM 2009 in Brazil, which is the largest international mining conference in Latin America.

Coffey general manager of operations in South America, Craig McCloskey, said both businesses have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to embed new VR technologies in the mining industry.

"Spatial data management is an important tool in providing planning, design, training and maintenance solutions to the mining industry, as well as in many other sectors," McCloskey said. "Virtalis’ GeoVisionary software coupled with the company’s systems expertise, presents an excellent opportunity to expand Coffey’s ability to provide high quality spatial data management solutions in 2-D, 3-D and 4-D visualisations."

According to David Cockburn-Price, Virtalis’ managing director; "GeoVisionary enables the real-time visualisation of high-detail GIS source data, and allows other data, such as geoscience, geotechnical, environmental, sub-surface, geochemical and other specialized information to be overlaid onto it, giving a complete picture."

Coffey plans to expand its VR and visualization service offering in the region across a range of sectors including oil & gas, infrastructure and property. Coffey also has strategic partnerships with a number of research institutions and universities in Brazil.
