Customized Pipes With Longer Life

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | October 1, 2006 | 12:00 am

Some of the most demanding challenges faced by pipe manufacturers come from mining clients. KWH Pipe of Vaasa, Finland, a pioneer in polyethylene pipe systems, has more than 50 years of experience. The company has recently launched two features that can help supply the right pipe for each job.

KWH Pipe offers three products suitable for different operating conditions. Using its testing equipment, it can determine the best solution for the job, whether it’s a solid-wall PE-HD pipe or a pipe with a special inner layer of abrasion-resistant material. This information can be used to build customized pipe. The slightly higher cost of custom pipe is offset by a longer working life and reduced labour and installation costs.

Multilayer pipes are currently available in sizes DN 63-400 mm, but KWH plans to produce them in sizes up to 1,600 mm in the near future. Using KWH Pipe’s mobile plants, solid-wall polyethylene pipes can be produced onsite where they are needed. This option will soon be offered to customers of the new multilayer slurry pipes.
