Side-dump buckets improve productivity

Canadian Mining Journal Staff | December 1, 2004 | 12:00 am

Gjerstad mek industri of Norway supplies side-dump buckets for tunnel mucking to 90% of Norwegian tunneling contractors, as well as supplying tunneling and mining operations worldwide. The buckets reduce mucking time by at least 25% compared with conventional front-dump buckets. The reduced mucking cycle time helps cut machine and tire wear and their resultant costs, while longevity is also much improved with loading and dumping from different parts of the bucket. Fuel consumption and costs are also lower, with related environmental benefits.

The mucking cycle reduction arises because the loader needs only to move forward to the muck pile, load the bucket, reverse straight back alongside the truck, and tip. A conventional loader with a front dump bucket configuration typically moves forward to the muck pile, loads, reverses and turns 90, moves forward again to the truck to tip, reverses back and then moves forward again back to the muck pile–a far longer cycle.

Gjerstad builds side-dump buckets from 2-m3 to 7-m3 capacity to fit various types of wheel loaders or LHDs. You can obtain further information from Kai Hauge, phone +47 3711 9144; e-mail kai@gjerstad.com; website www.gjerstad.com.
