The New Afton Mine, a primary operation of Canadian mining company New Gold (TSX: NGD; US-NYSE American: NGD), has launched a groundbreaking digital transformation initiative. Ambra Solutions deployed an advanced LTE and 5G network that aims to redefine efficiency, safety, and automation within one of the world's most complex mining environments.
New Afton operates beneath the historic Afton open pit mine, about 10 km west of Kamloops, British Columbia. The mine produced approximately 63,000 ounces of gold and 50 million pounds of copper in 2025. The operation employs the highly specialized block caving method, a technique used in only a small number of mines globally, which requires precise coordination and cutting-edge technology.

The LTE/5G deployment began in March 2024 and proceeds in three strategic phases. Phase 1 involves implementing LTE-powered remote operations in the C-Zone, a newly developed mining area. Phase 2 will expand underground LTE coverage to improve connectivity throughout the mine. Phase 3 will enhance surface communication across the rugged, mountainous terrain. This transformation tackles significant challenges, including the need for high-precision geolocation to track extracted minerals and the integration of advanced wireless systems with legacy cable infrastructure.
The project enables remote operations of Sandvik vehicles in the C-Zone, which significantly enhances safety and productivity. The LTE network also supports Push-to-Talk (PTT) communication, ensuring seamless coordination among workers. Real-time geolocation via the Intelligent Positioning System (iPS) allows precise tracking of personnel and equipment for improved safety and operational efficiency. Real-time network monitoring through Smartloads ensures network reliability and security.

New Afton leverages these technologies to optimize operations while significantly enhancing worker safety. Remote operations allow miners to control machinery from a distance, reducing the need for frequent commutes to the deepest parts of the mine, a journey that typically takes 50 minutes each way.
This advanced connectivity initiative serves as a blueprint for the future of underground mining. New Afton's LTE network lays the foundation for predictive analytics, automation, and comprehensive asset tracking. Robust cybersecurity measures ensure data integrity and operational security. New Afton establishes a new standard for digital transformation in mining, transforming connectivity into a competitive advantage in one of the most demanding industries globally.
