Sandvik has launched the Leopard DI610i, a new high-performance down-the-hole (DTH) surface drill rig for open-pit mines and drilling contractors. The company designed this rig to maximize utilization, facilitate rapid operator training, and optimize total cost of ownership.

The Leopard DI610i handles hole sizes ranging from 115–203 mm (4½"–8") and targets demanding production drilling environments. It combines proven performance with operator-assisting features and a simulator-based training program to ensure consistent results.

"Contractors and mine operators are working under constant pressure to keep productivity and uptime high while controlling both investment and operating costs. With Leopard DI610i, we focused on what customers need most in production drilling: reliable performance, high availability and a straightforward operator experience that helps teams get up to speed quickly," Jari Läntinen, business development manager for surface drilling at Sandvik, stated.

Sandvik has optimized the Leopard DI610i for total cost of ownership. The rig features a fit-for-purpose specification and streamlined features to help customers manage capital expenses. Throughout its lifecycle, the rig's improved serviceability and extended service intervals contribute to reduced downtime and lower operating costs.

The company built the Leopard DI610i on the trusted Leopard DI650i platform and high-performance components, engineering it for dependable operation in challenging open-pit applications. The design incorporates customer-driven improvements, including upgrades from the latest Gen2 platform.

"Leopard DI610i is built on technology and components that are proven in the field. The focus has been to deliver a reliable production drilling solution that stays productive over time and is easy to keep running in real operating conditions," Jarno Viitaniemi, product manager for surface drilling at Sandvik, explained.

To ensure fast operator onboarding, Sandvik has implemented a clear learning path from training to production. The process begins with the new SimDriller+ training program, where operators practice key tasks in a safe environment and familiarize themselves with operator-assisting sequences used in actual drilling.

Training continues in the spacious iCab cabin, designed for both comfort and practical on-machine instruction. The cabin includes space behind the operator's seat for a trainer to observe and guide operations. In daily work, operator-assisting sequences help reduce repetitive tasks and ensure consistent, accurate operation.

By helping operators build confidence early, the Leopard DI610i supports safe, consistent operation and reduces the risk of avoidable wear and downtime, protecting customer investments and improving long-term utilization.
