It's official. On Oct. 1, 2007, SHERWOOD COPPER of Vancouver declared its Minto copper-gold mine in commercial production. I am particularly excited because I have been invited to the opening ceremonies, 240 km north of Whitehorse.

This will be my first trip to the Yukon, something I look forward to despite warnings of cold, wet weather. In preparation I have been studying photos from the project and trying to decide which hat and mittens to take. Sherwood Copper has a full, 14-hour day lined up beginning with a 7:00 a.m. flight from Vancouver and ending up after dark back where we began.

These kinds of business trips are the most rewarding part of my job. My travels have taken me from the Polaris mine on Little Cornwallis Island near the North Pole to high in the Andes of South America. Ive been to Europe and above the Arctic Circle not only in Canada but in Sweden. Now I am headed north again.

Im looking forward to a long and busy day collecting the facts for CMJ readers. And I will share all that I learn with them in the February 2008 issue.
