AUSTRALIA – Companies are constantly looking for ways to drill straighter holes at lesser costs. The new COPROD technology from Atlas Copco combines the best of down-the-hole and top hammer drills. [caption id="attachment_1003718357" align="alignleft" width="300"] Atlas Copco’s COPROD technology combines the best of DTH and top hammer drilling.[/caption] By combining the ability to drill straight holes with a DTH rig with the fast penetration rates of top hammer drills, COPROD offer significant advantages over either of them. Impact energy is transmitted through a solid inner rod. The outer tube is solely for rotation and air delivery, giving greater accuracy and drill speed. Atlas Copco says COPROD produces up to 50% faster penetration rates than DTH drills. Individual drill string components can be replaced independently as necessary. COPROD uses much less fuel per metre drilled than DTH. And the total cost of using COPROD technology is less than other options. COPROD is available on SmartROC C50 drills. The 30-kW model is suitable for diameters of 89 and 150 mm. The 50-kW model can handle three diameters from 115 to 216 mm.
