MANITOBA Bissett, Man.-based SAN GOLD CORP. celebrated the grand opening of its Rice Lake gold mine and the pouring of its first gold bars in Bissett, on Aug. 23. Approximately 500 employees and family members, local community leaders, representatives of the Manitoba government and several hundred shareholders attended the event.
The highlight of the ceremony was the live pouring of two gold dor bars that were made available for viewing with a Royal Canadian Mounted Police escort. Site tours including the San Gold No.1 mine were conducted as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Rice Lake headframe, which was opened by a local aboriginal drum and vocal group.
The shipment of these bars and those previously poured is a significant event for San Gold since it represents the final step to a self-sustaining gold mining operation. San Gold is now Canada's newest and Manitoba's only gold miner.
