ALBERTA – Industrial wastewater from a pipe that froze and broke at the Suncor oil sands project near Fort McMurray may have reached the Athabasca River. The leak was detected early on March 25, and it was stopped by 4 pm the same afternoon. Contents of the pipe spilled into a partially frozen outflow pond contained treated water.

An estimate of the amount of water spilled or what toxic components it might contain was not available at press time on Wednesday. However, Suncor said it believes the wastewater was so diluted that the potential for harm is low. Testing is underway to determine te composition and toxicity of the spilled material.

The Suncor website is at Suncor.com.
