OMA recognizes talented high school students

The Ontario Mining Association's "So You Think You Know Mining" (SYTYKM) competition is an annual event designed to recognize the video talents of high school students across the province.

The Ontario Mining Association's "So You Think You Know Mining" (SYTYKM) competition is an annual event designed to recognize the video talents of high school students across the province.

 The competition was originated by OMA as a way of getting today's students interested in a career in the mining industry once they have completed their studies.

Once again this year, organizers say the entries were "outstanding" and the awards ceremony at the Royal Ontario Museum showcased the creativity and talent of a multitude of students from different parts of the province.

 The producers of the winning videos walked off the stage with SYTYKM statues and cheques in recognition of their hard work and videographic talents.

 Topping the list as the Best Overall Winner and recipient of a cheque for $5,000.00 was Amanda Ceniti from Georgetown District High School for: "Mining: A Musical." (An operetta about mining).

 Other winners included:

Josiah Scott from Jean Vanier Catholic High School in Collingwood won Best Original Screenplay for "Without Mining" while Max Parr from the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto won Best Original Score for "Mine (d) Your Business."Last year, Mr. Parr won the Best Director award.

 Meaghan Butler from South London C.I. won the Best Director award this year for "Mining Opportunities."

 Md. Rayun Mehrab from Danforth Tech in Toronto won Best Video in a language other than English, for the Bengali production of "The Mining Prospectors."

Mitch Langdon from Woodstock C.I. won the Best Comedy award for "Highschool Minebacker."

 Quentin Hall from H.B. Beal Secondary in London won the Best Animation award for "MiningMan and the Power of Mining."

 The Best Runner-Up award was shared between Leah Gosselin from Ecole Secondaire Catholique Theriault in Timmins and Ray Xue from Don Mills C.I. in Toronto for "Tomorrow."

 Also, Daniela Carlino from Lake Superior High School in Terrace Bay, who produced "Career Day in Mining" was on hand to put  together a video of the awards ceremony for the OMA website.
