Canada and Peru signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to deepen cooperation on critical minerals and sustainable mining, officials announced.

The agreement was signed in Lima by Canada’s Ambassador to Peru, Jean-Dominique Ieraci, on behalf of the Tim Hodgson, the federal minister of energy and natural resources, and Peru’s minister of energy and mines, Angelo Victorino Alfaro Lombardi. It establishes a framework for bilateral investment and collaboration on technologies for traceability and decarbonization, regulatory and governance improvements, environmental and social best practices, and workforce development.

The MOU follows Canadian efforts to expand international partnerships on critical minerals. Since summer 2025, Ottawa has signed 21 bilateral collaboration frameworks on mining and critical minerals and helped create the G7 Critical Minerals Production Alliance, which the government says has mobilized about US$18.5 billion in capital for mining projects in fewer than six months.

Canadian officials said the agreement could increase exports of Canadian mining equipment, technology and services to Peru and support the development of more diversified supply chains for materials used in defence, advanced manufacturing and low-emissions technologies.
