Epiroc launched a charging solution designed specifically for underground mining's harsh conditions, addressing the industry's struggle to electrify heavy-duty equipment safely and efficiently.
The Swedish mining equipment manufacturer rolled out chargers that combine ruggedized reliability, compatibility across equipment brands, and smart power distribution. Mining operations can now charge electric vehicles from any manufacturer using the same system, eliminating compatibility headaches that have slowed electrification adoption.
"Our new charging solution is the result of years of experience from the field, delivering reliable power where it's needed and giving customers the operational flexibility to get the most from their electrified vehicles - regardless of the manufacturer," Trent Sears, global product manager –for EV infrastructure at Epiroc, said.
The system tackles underground mining's unique challenges head-on. Engineers built the chargers with IP65-classified protection to survive dust, humidity, and round-the-clock heavy use. Remote charge posts connect to central cabinets from up to 300 meters away, letting mines place charging stations closer to active work areas instead of forcing operators to travel long distances for power.
Operations can mount charge posts on pedestals or walls wherever they work best. This flexibility helps mines reduce unnecessary vehicle travel, cut charging queues, and keep equipment working instead of waiting for power.
The system shares available electricity dynamically across up to eight charging posts per cabinet. When one vehicle finishes charging, the system automatically redirects that power to other posts where vehicles need it most.
"To further boost productivity, the chargers support dynamic power sharing across up to eight posts per cabinet. This allows available capacity to be directed to where it's needed, adapting in real time to changing fleet patterns and helping maintain high equipment utilization throughout every shift," Sears added.
The chargers include tracking software to monitor charging sessions and plug-and-play components that simplify repairs, installation, and setup. These features create what Epiroc calls a "one charging solution" for mines running mixed fleets of battery-electric equipment.
Better charging infrastructure helps mining companies reduce fossil fuel dependence while avoiding supply disruptions and price swings that hurt operations.
Epiroc will offer the charging solutions globally starting April 2026.
