Workplace Safety North has revealed its keynote speakers for the annual Mining Health and Safety Conference, which takes place April 15-16 at Sudbury's Holiday Inn. The event has sold out with more than 250 participants expected to attend. The conference carries the theme "Shaping Safety in the Critical Minerals Era" and will feature presentations, technical sessions, a trade show, networking events, and an awards ceremony.
The sold-out status reflects strong industry interest in addressing safety challenges within this expanding sector. Sudbury's hosting of the event aligns with the city's position as a major mining centre, providing attendees access to local expertise and networking opportunities within Ontario's mining community.
Workplace Safety North operates as a not-for-profit health and safety association funded by the provincial government. Based in North Bay, the organization provides approved health and safety training and services specifically for mining and forest products industries. The conference brings together mining professionals to advance safety and sustainability as the sector responds to rising demand for critical minerals essential to clean energy technologies and electric vehicle production
For 28 years, the gathering has drawn around 300 attendees annually from the global mining industry to share knowledge about sector-specific hazards and explore innovations.
Industry leaders address evolving safety challenges
WSN President and CEO Mike Parent emphasized the conference's importance as Ontario's mining sector expands to meet growing critical mineral demand. He noted that prioritizing compliance, risk management, and safety culture becomes essential as the industry evolves, and the conference supports professionals by sharing practical insights and technical expertise needed to manage emerging risks and protect workers.
Allan James Moore, a Canadian registered safety professional with a background in standup comedy, will open the conference with his presentation on human and organizational performance in safety. Dan Comiskey, a former Canadian Football League all-star and Grey Cup champion, will deliver the closing keynote on strengthening leadership and safety culture.
Conference addresses critical mining challenges
This year's sessions will explore key challenges and emerging solutions shaping mining's future. The agenda focuses on high-risk hazards specific to underground work, safety culture and management systems, environmental responsibility, and workplace well-being and mental health. Additional topics include community partnerships and sustainable growth, workforce readiness and future skills development, plus research and innovation. These areas reflect the industry's need to balance increased mineral production with enhanced safety standards and environmental stewardship.
