Northern, Cambrian to create joint school of mines

Northern College and Cambrian College have agreed to create a federated school of mines. By pooling their expertise, the colleges will share data, information and knowledge with the ultimate goal of attracting people to the North, strengthening communities through access to education and training, encouraging learners to stay in northern Ontario, and assisting the industry in changing its image and meeting its labour force and other developmental needs.

Cambrian has had nearly four decades as a leader, innovator and partner in the mining and mineral resources field. Its graduates, apprentices and trainees join a high-paying mineral industry and excel in today’s challenging work environments. It has three campuses in Sudbury, an international campus in India, and partnerships in several other countries.

Northern has five campuses, including the world-renowned Haileybury School of Mines, in northern Ontario. Its graduates fill mining engineering, trades, apprenticeship and business roles for the industry and related sectors.

Atlas Copco lends support to Dynamic Earth

Atlas Copco Construction & Mining Canada has made a long-term investment in the Dynamic Earth attraction at Science North. The company will invest $50,000 annually for three years to support Phase II construction of the exhibit. Atlas Copco has committed a further $20,000 annually for 13 years beginning in 2009.

Dynamic Earth Phase II will include the new Atlas Copco Theatre, a multipurpose room, exhibit changes, landscaping and an expanded lobby. The development of Phase II is intended to broaden the visitor experience by increasing the capacity to present diversified content and changing exhibits. Dynamic Earth Phase II is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007.

The Atlas Copco Theatre will highlight Dynamic Earth’s expansion program and will provide a multi-use facility for the Sudbury community. This 160-seat theatre will be equipped with the latest in digital cinema technology. High-definition productions with a geological theme will be shown and coupled with ancillary exhibits to complete the visitor experience. The theatre will also host live presentations, signature productions, seminars and public lectures.
