Metallogenic map guides explorers through South America

A metallogenic map that has just been released, showing the border regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru, will be a valuable guide to explorers. The new map (in Spanish and English), including an accompanying report (in Spanish), was prepared by the national geological surveys of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru, with the help of the Geological Survey of Canada.

In addition to providing extensive data on mineral deposits, the map forms the latest compilation of the geology of the Andean region from 14* to 28* south. The geological compilation used over 300 new, high-quality radiometric dates and nearly 1,800 new geochemical analyses. The accompanying report provides details of all the rock units, in addition to deposit information.

A two-volume Geodata CD-ROM will also be released at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention. This product includes the map in GIS format, the report in both Spanish and English, airborne geophysical data, LANDSAT imagery, a database (MAPdb) that includes the new geochemical analyses and over 300 new radiometric dates, and a photographic database. These are the most up-to-date and comprehensive products available for this highly prospective, mineral-rich region.

The map, the report ($50.00), and the CD-ROM($70.00) are the culmination of five years of work under the Multinational Andean Project, an international co-operative project.
