The new chief operating officer of Crew Development Corp. is Wolf K. Seidler. He is a mining engineer with 30 years experience in Canada and abroad, including the development and operation of several narrow-vein gold mines. Crew is attempting to become a focused mining company rather than the diversified holding company it has been. The company has interests in base metal mines in Zambia and South Africa. It is also active at a variety of exploration and development projects around the world.
Glen Dickson has stepped aside from his duties as president and CEO of Cumberland Resources. In the interim, Kerry Curtis has assumed those duties. Walter Segsworth, former president and COO of Homestake, has been named co-chairman of Cumberland and will assist Mr. Curtis.
DRC Resources Corp. has appointed a new chief financial officer, Ian M. Beardmore. He has been a member of The Institute of Chartered Accounts of B.C. since 1972 and is presently in public practice. Former CFO C. Robert Edington has resigned that position but remains on the DRC board of directors.
Dumont Nickel has announced the appointment of Shahe F. Sabag, MSc, PGeo, as president and CEO. He replaces Steve McIntyre who had been president from 1991 until he recently resigned to pursue other interests. John Cullen has been appointed a director, and Lee Barker, PEng, named as a technical advisor. The Dumont board has approved the granting of 1.5 million incentive stock options exercisable at a price of 10 cents/share for officers and directors of the company.
Robert S. Wasylyshyn, PGeo, is the new president and COO and also a director of Gold-Ore Resources in Vancouver. He previously managed the exploration activities and gold discoveries of Radius Exploration and Mar-West Resources in Central America. Alvin Jackson, the previous president and COO of Gold-Ore, has resigned from that position but remains on the board.
Great Western Mineral Group has reorganized its top management. Former president Neil Yingling resigned on Sept. 30 to re-establish his private financial and industrial management consulting practice. He remains on Great Western’s technical advisory committee. Gary L. Billingsley has been named interim president while continuing in his current capacity as chief geologist and director of project operations. The company is based in Saskatoon and has a gold prospect and a diamond prospect in Northern Saskatchewan.
Richard J. Bailes is the new president and CEO of International Curator Resources Ltd. He is a graduate of McGill University and the University of Manitoba. His 30-year career includes evaluations and development of mineral projects, and he has published a number of papers on economic geology. Bailes joined Curator in 1989 as vice-president. The new vice-president is Jan E. Christoffersen, a career explorationist with degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Charles Smith has resigned from the board of Manhattan Minerals Corp., and Larry Glaser has been named CEO. Dr. Glaser was CEO of the company between June 2001 and July 2002, and has also been executive chairman since April 2002. Manhattan Minerals also said it has closed a $2.4-million financing to continue work in Peru.
Joseph van Bastelaar, founder of Romarco Minerals, tendered his resignation as president and CEO effective Oct. 11. He will continue to serve as chairman of the company. The board appointed Diane Garrett as Romarco’s president and CEO. She holds a PhD in mineral economics and brings to her new job 10 years of senior management experience at several public mining companies. Romarco is adding four independent members to its board; they are: Robert van Doorn (mining consultant), R.J. Don MacDonald (VP and CFO of Forbes Medi-Tech Inc.), Leendert G. Krol (mining consultant), and David C. Beling (mining consultant).
Obituary
John (Jack) Frey died on September 4, 2002, in North Bay, Ont. Frey was born in Cranbrook, B.C., in 1926. He graduated with a B.Sc. from University of British Columbia in 1949 and received his B.Ed. from University of Toronto in 1964. He was well-known as a teacher with the Haileybury School of Mines, Northern College, from 1964-67 and as Dean from 1967-89.
