Alex Davidson has been promoted to executive VP of exploration at Barrick Gold Corp. Since joining the company in 1993, Davidson has overseen the expansion of Barrick’s exploration program from North America into South America and around the world. Davidson is a holder of the Prospector of the Year Award from the PDAC.
Bactech Environmental has appointed Brad Marchant to the position of chairman and Paul Semple VP operations and COO. The company provides bioleaching plants for the recovery of gold.
Boliden AB of Stockholm has made two changes to its management board. John Ohman is now CFO, having been previously the company’s controller in the Toronto office. Svante Nilsson will become VP mining operations effective August 2003. He has been VP production at Atlas Copco Secoroc.
Cameco Corp. has appointed Victor Zaleschuk to the position of non-executive chairman. He joined the Cameco board in 2001 after retiring from Nexen (formerly Canadian Occidental Petroleum).
The Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association has re-elected Jacques Adam (Nexan Canada) its president for a second term. Other members of the executive are senior VP I.L. Betcherman (Ingot Metal Co.), and secretary-treasurer J.D. Coulton (Noranda). Stephen Knapp is the new executive director of the association.
Canadian Oil Sands Trust has named Allen Hagerman CFO of its subsidiary, Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. The appointment took effect June 1, 2003.
Michael L. Carroll is the new CFO of Cumberland Resources. He has over 20 years of financial management experience in the mining sector, notably with Homestake Mining, Bond International Gold and St. Joe Minerals.
Dofasco Inc. has appointed Donald A. Pether president and CEO, replacing John Mayberry who retired following the annual meeting. Pether joined Dofasco in 1970, rising to the position of COO in 2002. Brian Aranha becomes the new COO. Brian MacNeill, who has been a board member since 2001, was named chairman.
Gerry E. Bidwell has become the new exploration manager for Vancouver’s Heritage Explorations, which is 42%-owned by St Andrew Goldfields. Bidwell will head up Heritage’s exploration efforts at its Eskay Creek, B.C. properties.
Bernard M. Michel, retired chairman and CEO of Cameco Corp., was elected to the board of IMC Global Inc. He is also chairman of Bruce Power Inc.
Dallas Howe has been elected to the chairmanship of Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. He takes over from retiring chair Donald Phillips. Also elected to the board are John Estey, Alice Laberge and Elena Viyella de Paliza. Doug Bourne and Tom Wright have retired.
George Werniuk has joined the Minerals Business team of SGS Minerals Services as a marketing communications specialist, based in Lakefield, Ont. He has broad-based work experience in exploration geology, with previous employers including Billiton Metals Canada and Central Asia Goldfields.
Moving to Fort McMurray, Alta., in July 2003 to head up the oil sands operations, is Steve Williams, currently Suncor Energy’s VP of corporate development and CFO. He will take over from Mike Ashar, who is relocating to Denver, Colo., to lead Suncor’s new downstream business in the United States.
