Lawrence Winter has accepted the position of VP exploration at Altius Minerals of St. John’s, Nfld. Additionally, the company has named Ben Lewis its new CFO.
Atacama Minerals of Vancouver announced that Brian Kennedy is joining the company as vice-president operations. He holds a degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of British Columbia and has held senior process and project management positions with AMEC, Rescan and Fluor Daniel.
Montreal-based Blue Note Mining has hired Jean-Guy Leclair as mine manager of its Caribou mine in Bathurst, N.B. He moves to New Brunswick from Xstrata’s Raglan mine on the Ungava Peninsula.
Canmex Minerals of Vancouver has named Richard Schmitt as president and CEO. He brings almost 30 years experience in the upstream oil and gas industry to the position.
Martin Quick has been elected a director of Reno, Nev.-based Gold Summit. He recently retired as president and COO of Power Resources, a subsidiary of Cameco. He is also president and CEO of Khan Resources.
Grande Cache Coal of Calgary announced that David Passfield, vice-president and general manager of the Grande Cache operations, has left the company. Lloyd Metz, director of engineering and planning, is acting as interim GM until a permanent replacement can be hired.
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia awarded its 2006 C.J. Westerman Memorial Award to Patrick McAndless, who is vice-president exploration at Vancouver-based Imperial Metals. McAndless joined Imperial in 1996 as part of its merger with Bethlehem Resources.
Rob McEwen, CEO of both Denver-based U.S. Gold and Toronto’s Lexam Explorations, has been named the Most Innovative CEO by Canadian Business Magazine. He was selected for his innovations that made Goldcorp a mining powerhouse and for his and wife Cheryl’s $10-million donation to the University of Toronto Health Network, as well as other accomplishments.
The Mining Association of Canada has asked Peter R. Jones, president and CEO of HudBay Minerals, to fill the association’s vacant chairman position. Derek Pannell recently tendered his resignation from the position. Jones has been an active member of the MAC board and a key member of the MAC’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) governance team. He also serves as an industry representative on the TSM Community of Interest Advisory Panel.
Mosaic, the potash producer based in Plymouth, Minn., has named James Prokopanko to succeed retiring president and CEO Fritz Corrigan. The change will be effective on Jan. 1, 2007.
Vancouver-based North American Tungsten has given the job of COO to J. Britt Reid. He was recently vice-president mining operations for Aur Resources and oversaw the Quebrada Blanca and Carmen de Andacollo projects in Chile.
The 2006 Northern Ontario Business Award for Entrepreneur of the Year has been given to Bob Lipic, the 62-year-old president and CEO of Mining Technologies International in Sudbury, one of Canada’s largest mining equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Carlos Mirabal has been named president and CEO of Toronto’s Orvana Minerals. He was both Orvana COO and vice-president of operations at the Orvana subsidiary that built the Don Mario mine in Bolivia. He holds a Masters degree in metallurgical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
Toronto-based Patricia Mining has selected Christopher Chadder as president of the company. He was the CFO for two years.
Peregrine Diamonds of Vancouver has appointed Rod Davey as its new COO. He is a former president of Diavik Diamond Mines.
The new president and CEO of Vancouver’s Prominex Resource Corp. is Lorne King. Former president Allan Frew will remain the company’s chairman. Prominex also announced the appointment of Paul O’Brien as vice-president exploration.
Rambler Metals & Mining of St. John’s, Nfld., has named George Ogilvie to the position of vice-president of operations to oversee the reopening of the Rambler copper project in Baie Verte. Ogilvie received a mine engineering degree from the Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, and began his career in South Africa. He moved to Canada in 1997, eventually becoming mine manager at Flin Flon, Manitoba. He was recently employed by Dynatec as mine manager for the McCreedy West mine near Sudbury, Ont.
