Reader rebuttal (April 01, 2008)

Sherritt and Cuba

I enjoyed your article on Sherritt and especially the nickel operations both in Cuba and Canada [CMJ February 2008]. Although I worked in Cuba in the vanguard of the early 1990s junior exploration play, I never got to see Moa and do the tour there as you did. It’s a very interesting story, and Cuba has about 15% of the world’s identified nickel resources, according to the CVRD Inco people. There are some great terrains in Cuba, which one day will be explored and developed again.

In 1994 we (Macdonald Mines) made a worthwhile gold discovery in eastern Cuba, which has yet to be exploited. In the last year, I made a proposal to the Cuban authorities at MINBAS through our embassy in Havana. However, politically speaking it appears that Canadians are not really the favoured partners anymore, as I see that the Venezuelans, Mexicans and also the Chinese are doing most of the business now.
