Haul road flexible pavements from Russia

From Arkady G. Kolchanov, executive manager of the Promtransniiproekt Research Centre in Moscow, comes this information about haul road designs.

“In general the following three criteria are used for designing flexible pavements for haul roads in Russia: elastic deflection, shear resistance in soils and loose materials, and stretch resistance upon monolithic layer bending. In order to design flexible pavements, Promtransniiproekt has been carrying out large-scale theoretical and experimental research based on temperature, pressure and deformation sensor application for more than 30 years. The research has resulted in determining: the required strength of haul road pavement in view of the total amount of material to be hauled, the foot diameter of haul truck tires according to the actual tire placement, and other parameters affecting haul road pavement thickness.

Using this method allows a 15-25% decrease in the cost of flexible pavement. Haul roads constructed using these parameters are working successfully in Russia and a number of other countries.”
