Ryan trophy winners improve mining’s safety standards
Mines from three different provinces gained top honours in each of the categories in the John T. Ryan Trophy program in the year 2000. The winner in the metal mines category was Cameco Corp.’s Rabbit Lake uranium operation in northern Saskatchewan. The top select mine was Georgia-Pacific‘s Gypsum mine in Nova Scotia, and in the coal category, Luscar Ltd.’s Sheerness mine in Alberta was the winner. The awards were presented in late April at the CIMM annual general meeting in Quebec City.
Over the past five years, the average reportable injury rate of all winners in this national mining industry safety recognition program, national and regional, has declined by 40%. The trophy committee has therefore raised the bar, making it 20% more difficult to be eligible for a trophy.
