BRITISH COLUMBIA - ALCAN INC. of Montreal is ready to update its Kitimat, B.C., primary aluminum smelter at a cost of approximately US$1.8 billion. The modernization would increase Kitimat's annual primary aluminum production by more than 60% and make it not only one of Alcan's largest wholly-owned smelters, but also one of the three largest in North America.
The Kitimat modernization will raise output to 400,000 tonnes/year from the current 245,000 tonnes/year rate. The first phase will come onstream in 2009, and completion of the project is slated for 2011.
