NAIN, Labrador BAE-NEWPLAN GROUP, a subsidiary of SNC-LAVALIN, has won a major contract for the VOISEY'S BAY NICKEL mine and concentrator. The contract covers engineering, procurement and construction management on the east coast of Labrador. SNC-Lavalin completed the feasibility study for the project earlier this year.

BAE-Newplan is already hard at work on the construction project. The 6,000-tonne/day open pit mine and concentrator will cost $710 million before the first concentrate is shipped to Inco smelters in Ontario and Manitoba in 2006.

If all goes according to plan, Voisey's Bay Nickel will eventually build a hydrometallurgical treatment plant at Argentia, Nfld., by 2011. There is also the potential to develop an underground mine and expand the concentrator at an additional cost of $825 million, perhaps by 2018.

BAE-Newplan is headquartered at 1133 Topsail Rd., P.O. Box 487, Mount Pearl, NL, A1N 2W4. Albert Williams (CEO) and Elwood Reid (president) can be reached by telephoning 709-368-0118.
