CALGARY - LUFF INDUSTRIES has shipped its largest conveyor system for the Panda underground mine at the Ekati diamond project in the Northwest Territories. BHP BILLITON needed a 2.4-km, 54-inch-wide belt plus the necessary idlers, pulleys, shafts and bearings. Luff also supplied and installed SKF bearings, which allowed the conveyor drives to arrive on site as complete units.
Initial production from the Panda underground mine is expected this year with the commissioning of the conveyor system. Full production will be reached in 2006. It will yield 4.7 million carats of diamonds over six years.
