BRITISH COLUMBIA — Vancouver-based Imperial Metals, owner of the Mount Polley copper mine near Williams Lake, has been forced to lay off 49 of its 397 employees at the mine. The company says the layoffs are part of its cost reduction and restructuring efforts to keep the mine operating despite "sharply" reduced metal prices.

Imperial said in a news release that it will continue exploration at Mount Polley to follow up on the recent discovery of high-grade copper mineralization in the Boundary and Southeast zones. If these zones can be quickly developed, their high grades will enhance feed grades to the mill and reduce production costs.
