BRITISH COLUMBIA IMPERIAL METALS of Vancouver reported that a pit wall failed at the Huckleberry copper mine on June 22, 2007. The mine is located 123 km southwest of Houston.

No injuries were sustained, as employees and equipment were moved to other workplaces when cracks in the highwall were noticed on June 18, said the company. A large volume of rock from the northern highwall of the East zone pit was displaced into the pit over Thursday and Friday.

The East Zone pit was nearing the end of its reserve life, and was scheduled to be completed in late July of this year. Other parts of the mine were not affected by this slope failure, and milling continues using stockpiled ore. At this time, the mine staff expect production to be maintained from these stockpiles along with accelerated production from the new Main Zone Extension pit.
