SANTACRUZ, Mexico COMPANIA MINERA LA PARRENA has awarded a US$1.95-million contract to SNC-LAVALIN for the engineering and procurement services for a new copper refinery. SNC-Lavalin's office in Santiago, Chile, is designing a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant that will produce 65,000 tonnes of high-grade copper cathode per year.

The Milpillas project will be operated by La Parrena, a subsidiary of GROUPO PENOLES of Mexico. By the time the project reaches commercial production in 2005, it will have cost in the neighbourhood of US$180 million. The SNC-Lavalin contract includes designing an above-ground stockpile, secondary and tertiary crusher systems, an agglomeration plant, plus the SX/EW circuit.
