CHILE - The world's largest copper producer, CODELCO, has selected ABB technology for its Gaby solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. ABB will supply four 40-kA, 270-V DC rectifier systems for the EW plant. Four rectifier transformers, a harmonic filter, a harmonic filter engineering study, as well as commissioning and start-up services are included in the multi-million-dollar contract.

The Gaby project is located 203 km east of Antofagasta. Codelco is building an open pit and heap leaching facility in addition to the SX/EW plant. Start-up of the US$527-million project is planned for early 2008. Annual capacity will be 150,000 tonnes of copper cathodes.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in about 100 countries and employs about 107,000 people.
