ANTOFAGASTA, Chile NORANDA says its expanded Altonorte copper smelter has achieved design capacity, doubling its concentrate feed tonnage to 820,000 t/year. The annual copper output will be 290,000 t Cu rather than 160,000 t. Sulphuric acid output will be 700,000 t, compared to 220,000 t, making Altonorte a much more environmentally acceptable operation.
The Phase III expansion cost US$170 million. Ramp-up of the larger facilities began in January 2003 without any lost-time injuries. Full capacity will be reached in July.
