OTTAWA - The UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA's Faculty of Science is the home of the new Goldcorp Chair in Economic Geology. GOLDCORP of Toronto has established the chair with a gift of $1.5 million to the university.

The holder of this first chair is Dr. Mark Hannington. He joined the Department of Earth Sciences in January 2005, and brought 15 years of research experience on gold and base metal deposits, from ancient volcanic environments in the Canadian Shield to actively forming mineral deposits on the modern ocean floor. He is also editor of the prestigious earth science journal, Economic Geology.

"We are very pleased that the Department of Earth Sciences will receive the first ever endowed chair in the Faculty of Science," says Professor Christian Detellier, former dean of the Faculty of Science, who helped establish the chair. "Goldcorp's gift will help us to develop a new program in research and education related to mineral resources in the Canadian Shield."
