TORONTO – Barrick Gold and the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) have signed a two-year agreement to develop human rights tools for business and to further improve the mining company’s performance on the matter.

Barrick will support the public launch and expansion of the DIHR’s Human Rights and Business Country Portal project. The project features in depth research on human rights conditions in specific countries to help would-be investors identify and address human rights risks around the globe. The DIHR will also develop customized country risk assessments and provide advice to Barrick on human rights challenges in countries where the company operates.

The agreement also enables the DIHR to exchanges information and facilitate multi-stakeholder dialog on local human rights and business issues in countries where Barrick operates.

“We have great respect for the DIHR and welcome this opportunity to work together to better ensure that we meet our responsibility to respect human rights in every country where we do business. This ongoing partnership is one of a series of proactive steps we are taking to improve human rights compliance across the company,” said Barrick president and CEO Jamie Sokalsky. “We hope other global companies will also benefit from DIHR research and tools that will be made available through this partnership.”

Reports prepared by the DIHR will be freely available to the public, presumably at the DIHR website, HumanRights.dk.
