SALT LAKE CITY - As part of the BOART LONGYEAR GROUP's commitment to and focus on the environment, the Drilling Services Group in the Americas has achieved ISO 14001 certification, effective November 2004.

ISO 14001 focuses on improving the management of an organization's environmental performance through the creation of an accredited environmental management system (EMS). The EMS is used by an organization to develop and implement its environmental policy and manage its environmental aspects, thus reducing its impact on the environment.

"The impact that ISO 14001 is already having in our workplace is apparent," says Denis Despres, VP of drilling services. "In addition to the recycling and waste management program we have adopted, we have seen significant improvements in job-site organization, record keeping and safety. These benefits will certainly translate into efficiency and cost improvements in the long run, which in turn will add value to services we provide our clients."

Tom Joiner, manager of health and safety for the Americas region, was appointed environmental management systems manager in January 2004 to direct this initiative for the Americas (the United States, Canada, Brazil and Peru).
